Weekend Recap for 09-19-2021

Greetings HVMB Families:

What a weekend!!!

I want to first start by saying thank you to all of the truck drivers and roadie crew and students (Ani, Lauren, and Aaron) who helped me move the entire Front Ensemble and stuff we needed for the football game from MHS to LHS all afternoon Thursday!!! What a huge help that was and I sincerely thank you all!!!

Friday’s game was nothing short of the literal opposite of our show title…at least until we performed :)…then I was reminded why we are doing all this! The kids were just 100% professionals about it all. I am honored once again to be working with such a great group!

The set up time at the game was just short of 7 minutes! AHHHHH

For a show, we need to be at 3:15 minutes or less, as a reference. So, without fail, after the performance we came up with a plan and in the most epic improvement in less than 24 hours I’ve ever witnessed, we made it on to the field at Sparta set at 3:05…NO PENALTIES!!! WOOHOOOOOOO!

I owe a huge thank you to Kit, Allen Payne, Max, and the ENTIRE FRONT ENSEMBLE for making the most of that opportunity.

I also owe a huge thank you to the rest of the band, whether they were moving equipment, props, or helping others, or setting their own stuff…because the reality is that we made this all happen together and it was an awesome thing to witness!!!

Saturday morning was an incredibly short practice and we spent a great deal of time addressing the set up, but the kids rehearsed and did what they needed without letting it get them down or distract them. They were a true class act.

The roadies, chaperones, truck drivers, parents and everyone who helped with uniforms, load, unload, and everything in between made it so our first competitive day as a band, and the first in our “Huron Valley Marching Band” history…an incredible success!

Thank you to our staff as well for helping navigate all we did this weekend with the game, rehearsal, and logistics at the show!
I cannot thank you all enough!

Parents – I have 100% faith and believe in your kids, and I hope you are all proud!

We finished just ahead of Hudsonville (.1 to be precise) and won 1st place, and Best Music, and were the unofficial “Grand Champion” of the Sparta Invitational. Realizing this is the first competitive show for MCBA since 2019, and the first competitive show for the Huron Valley Marching Band ever, I’d say that’s pretty awesome.

We (I especially) realize we have a ton left to do…and that is on me/staff, and we will keep working hard. What I can say is the kids did their absolute best, and I hope that everyone has the same buy-in that I do into this program and season, because I know we will continue to get better and can have a truly incredible year if we put our hearts into it!

I have lots more info to share later today with Weekly Updates, Home games for BOTH schools this week, and a few important updates with Lamphere weekend etc. Please look for another email later tonight.

Thank you parents, staff, families, and, most importantly, our amazing HVMB students…for a weekend I will never forget!!!
